Obituary

Lottie Mae Stewart Dawn was born in Panama City, Florida on April 23, 1947 to the union of Albert and Gladys Stewart. She is preceded in death by parents; grandparents (Abe and Laura Stringer and Edmond and Lottie Mae Stewart), and; sisters (Bessie Mc Cree and Anna Washington). Her roots were planted deep before her family made their way to St. Joseph, Missouri. It was there she came of age, attending St. Joe Central High School and beginning to shape the remarkable woman she would become. Lottie confessed a hope in Christ and was baptized at Trinity Baptist Church under the late Rev. Phillips.

Driven by a passion for helping others, she first attended Longview Community College, where she earned her Associate’s degree. She continued her education at Avila University and the University of Kansas, earning her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work. She then devoted 32 years to the State of Missouri, showing up every day for the people who needed someone in their corner. Lottie was a woman of warmth, wisdom, and deep compassion. Her beautiful spirit lit up every room she entered with her radiant smile and infectious personality. She was intentional in conversation, always seeking to understand more deeply and asked questions that truly mattered. Lottie had a gift for making others feel seen, heard, and valued. Her faith was central to who she was. She kept handwritten notes of scripture and phrases close to her — words like “Let not your heart be troubled” and “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I” . These words reflected the peace and strength she carried throughout her life. She was also known for her joy. A devoted fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas Jayhawks basketball, she brought that same passionate, spirited energy to everything she loved. She was funny, talkative, thoughtful, and caring — a truly great mom and a deeply loved soul. She is survived by her beloved children: Lamar Dawn, Laron Dawn, and Laytoya Dawn; her cherished grandchildren: Saniya Dawn, Sayriya Dawn, Elijah Dawn, Kayla Dawn, and Khloe Dawn; her sister Rev. Dr. Dorothy Blakley, brother-in law Leo Blakley; brother in-law William Y Washington; nieces Dr. Michelle Blakley and Jerrie Anne Washington; nephews Jimmy Blakley, Vincent Blakley, Kenneth Washington, Cornell McCree, Harry McCree, and Jerome McCree; great-nephews Emmanuel Byrd and Lamar Davis, great- niece Ebony Starks along with a wide circle of loved ones whose lives she touched deeply. She lived a life of purpose, faith and service, leaving a legacy woven into the hearts of all who knew her.
